With the release of the movie, “Think Like A Man,” celibacy, or rather, “keeping the cookie in the cookie jar,” has been a hot topic. Celibacy is attached to notions of the body being special, sacred even, and should not be given away so freely. From the Christian standpoint, this is definitely true, however, unlike the movie where they stress keeping the cookie in the cookie jar for 90 days, the Bible states that we should keep the cookie in the cookie jar until marriage.
Whoa! Until marriage? I know. Most of us have a very hard time doing that. I, myself, included. Here’s a little known fact: At one point in my life, I was celibate (by choice) for a year and a half. I can’t even remember why I made that decision. It may have been because I had become frustrated with men and thought that none of them deserved my cookies. But, apparently, I eventually succumbed and fell back in line with the mass of professed Christians who love the Lord but have very, and I mean, very weak flesh. This is ONE of the reasons I am glad that I am married today; so that I can have sex “legally.”
In two weeks there will be a SHERO Call on this topic celibacy. I invited everyone, married and single, to get on the call. We will discuss the body as a temple, soulties, the benefits of being celibate, how some women assuage the urges to fornicate, and how to live a lifestyle of celibacy. I will interview at least one Christian woman who has been celibate for over 7 years, and we will see how she is in her walk with God.
Hindsight really is 20/20. If I had known “then” what I know NOW, I would have remained a virgin until marriage. Since clearly I was not a virgin, by not being celibate, I opened myself up to ungodly soulties, strongholds, etc. And physically, I opened myself up to diseases and emotional instability. It just wasn’t worth it. But, God is good and was good to me back then. I did not survive unscathed, but I survived. So, if I can help anyone avoid the pitfalls that I found myself in, that will make it worth it on the back in. Tune into the call in two weeks and catch the video that will be a follow-up to the call in the days after.
In the meantime, here are a few scriptures that you can refer to ahead of time: Colossians 3:5, 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, 7. Take care, and be blessed, and consider keeping your cookie in the cookie jar!
