I had another one of my dreams last night. In my dream I was an apprentice for this really rich and nice looking guy. He was famous for many things, but especially for his “grind.” Everything he did seemed to be related to work and he was very successful. It seemed like he never slept. So as his apprentice, I did whatever he said—any hour of the day or night…and then I finally saw him sleep. When he woke up, he asked me, “Why isn’t this done?” Keep in mind, I worked the entire time he slept, doing exactly what he asked, to the best of my ability. I had not had any sleep. I had not had a break. And he had the nerve to ask why I wasn’t done?
I went slap off.
In my most irate sistavoice, “How you gon ask me why I’m not done? YOU’VE been sleeping! I haven’t had ANY sleep! I haven’t had a break! I’ve been working my a$$ off to do a good job for you and you come at me like THIS? You betta get the f##k outta here wit dat!” (And by the way, I don’t even usually cuss/curse…anymore.)
I immediately woke up from my dream and instantly recalled my dream, my mistake, and my lesson all in the same moment.
First of all, when we have an opportunity, no matter how good it is or isn’t, no matter how tired we are or aren’t, no matter how much we think we know or don’t know, it’s all irrelevant. An opportunity is an opportunity. An opportunity is a chance to learn something, to practice something, to make something, to create something, to go somewhere, to be somebody better…always. But what too many of us do, myself included, is complain about it.
When we have an opportunity, we need to make the best of it. We need to do whatever we are supposed to do, when we are supposed to do it, however we are supposed to do it, to the best of our abilities, without complaint.
Our blessings often get lost in our complaints.
…And we don’t even know it. At the very moment we begin to complain, a little of our blessing begins to go in another direction. In order to prevent this from happening, we must take a different approach. We need to renew our minds. Whatever situation we’re in, whatever opportunity we have accepted, we must be RESPECTFUL, GRATEFUL, POSITIVE, PLEASANT, and AGREEABLE, EASY TO WORK WITH. See, God is trying to cultivate us. The world isn’t always kind. People aren’t always perfect. Situations aren’t always optimal. God is trying to GROW us into someone better, someone stronger, who is able to appropriately handle a variety of situations effectively and represent Him well, before He promotes us to the next level. But, we don’t understand how WE fail the test. WE fail by complaining, behaving disrespectfully, and by being ungrateful, negative, and argumentative. And then have the nerve to complain about what someone else did to block our blessings!
No one can block our blessings! Only we can block our own blessings!
So, as has been my mantra for the last few weeks, especially when I want to complain, I say, “Today I will not complain.” I will shut up and let God do what He has got to do with me, and in me, in order for His purpose for me to be fulfilled.
Let the blessings come forth!
In love & peace,
“Do everything without complaining or arguing.” Philippians 2:14 [GW]
