Not everyone is caught up in the Christmas spirit; some people actually have the Christmas Blues. You know, where you care, but you’re just not feeling it? If you are one of those people, but want to get out of that funk and experience the holidays more fully, try one of the following ways to help you beat the Christmas Blues.
1. If you are an extrovert and love all the festivities, and you’re almost breaking your neck trying to do everything and get to every party to see everybody and you STILL aren’t feeling it, maybe you’re doing too much. Maybe you are doing so much that most of it just isn’t meaningful. If this is your case, I recommend slowing down. Take time to choose which activities, and with whom, are going to be the most meaningful for you. Then, do just those things. And when you’re engaged in whichever activities you choose, make sure that you are there fully. That is, be fully present; have your mind there instead of someplace else so that you can live in that moment.
2. Conversely, if you are an introvert and tend to get overwhelmed with all the millions of shoppers, lights, trees, Santas, etc., then maybe you need to honor how you feel and decide exactly what you need instead of trying to run with the masses just to fit in. Maybe you would enjoy the holidays more by enjoying and celebrating your own personal space more. Perhaps decorating your own space to your liking, enjoying quiet time by the fireplace with a warm, cozy blanket and a cup of hot chocolate while listing to your favorite Christmas jazz is just what you need. Maybe having just a few close friends and family over to hang out with and decorate the tree is all you need. Whatever it is that you need, honor that about yourself instead of doing “what most people do.” It’s okay to be you and it’s okay not to get caught up in all the busyness and sensationalism that can characterize the holidays nowadays.
3. Maybe you’re already following one of the above suggestions. Then, I recommend this: GIVE. Give your time. Give your money. Give your wisdom. Give your understanding. Give food. Give clothes. Give toys. Give your expertise. After all, Jesus IS the reason for the season, so GIVE. Bless someone because you have been blessed. There are few things more fulfilling than giving from the heart; and few things more beautiful than a giving spirit. And what better time to give than Christmas time? And what better way to get rid of the Christmas Blues? Try it and let me know how good it makes you feel. And by the way,
